Afraid of embracing your natural black curly hair? You are not Alone. Here is my story

MY STORY

I must admit  that i felt a bit strange and naked on my head the moment i removed my extentions. So it took me a while to get used to my new look. At times i would wake up in the morning and just wasn't sure if i had taken right choice by going natural. I actually decided all this one night when the family slept. And when my husband woke up the next day, he looked at me and said, "hi beautiful", like nothing had changed,  and that melted my heart, he preferred my african hair. He preferred the real me! What a relief, what a big bag of confidence he gave right there!  

At work 
I dreaded going to work, because i feared the reaction. It  immensely  irritated me that i was scared of being seen with my natural hair. When monday came, i rushed to work, and i for once felt lucky that we use hair nets for hygiene reasons at work. I covered my head and pretended like nothing was new. So when one of my curios colleagues came too close, and wanted to see what i had done i almost died. I felt embarrassed, when i removed my net, especially when they were all like whaat?, where is your hair? Did you cut it? what happened? I swear i felt ugly and naked. And i honestly did not like feeling so. 


Another male colleague asked me when i was going to put my hair back. And another one told me that the natural look made me look too masculine. Somebody  even called me called me Grace Jones(this she meant in a positive way though), and many wanted to TOUCH! Another black female said, "You look younger, but i will never compromise my looks, so going natural isn't for me, I have to look good". I for a moment shook my head and just understood the extend of how much our hair impacts our perception of beauty. It wasn't the good hair.Unfortunatley, my hair is not the good hair, according to the mainstream world. Even Michelle Obama and her daughters, had straight hair in the White House . Kerry Washington, Viola Davis and Gabrielle Union wear straight hair.
